.....Architect Leon Kravchenko's sketches and watercolors
not only offer a glimpse of his surroundings, but also convey a dialog of observations and interactions. Every day, for the past ten years, Leon sketched and aimed to capture the personas of the commuters of the New York City subway. Gazing into their faces - especially those of the sleeping passengers - one can discover the transparency of their emotions and body language. They exist in a world where they do not have to pretend and where their facial expressions offer insight into their character. The featured dialog in the sketches by Leon Kravchenko helps the audience see New York City from a different angle and take the metropolis in as a lively display of simple human emotions. As an extension of his sketches but also as its own medium, Leon presents the audience with a series of watercolor paintings. Done in one attempt using the "Alla Prima" technique, these paintings capture the ephemeral moments of serenity that one experiences when looking at nature. |
